Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction

The jaw joint is called the Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) because it forms between the Temporal bone (a part of our skull), and the Mandible (lower jaw bone). Dysfunction of this joint is called Temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMD). Most people say "I have TMJ", but they mean they have TMD, because saying "I have TMJ" is like saying "I have elbow"!

TMD refers to a group of conditions affecting the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), the muscles controlling jaw movement, and the surrounding ligaments etc. The TMJ allows for movements like chewing and speaking. TMD can lead to pain, restricted movement, and joint noises like clicking or popping. While the exact cause is often multifactorial, contributing factors include jaw injury, arthritis, chronic teeth grinding (bruxism), and stress. Epidemiological studies suggest that TMD is more common in women, particularly those aged 20-40 years. Treatment varies depending on severity, ranging from conservative approaches like physical therapy and stress management to more invasive options like injections or surgery for severe cases.
