Orthodontic issues are rarely emergencies but they can be uncomfortable or stressful if you are not sure what to do. Knowing how to handle common issues can help protect your treatment progress and keep you comfortable until you can see your orthodontist.

Common Orthodontic Issues and What to Do

Loose or Broken Bracket/Attachment

If a bracket becomes loose leave it in place and avoid hard or sticky foods. You can put some wax on it if it irritates your lip or cheek. Please contact us as soon as possible so we can book you an appointment to fix it, or so that we can extend the time that the staff has at your next appointment to do the adjustment and replace the bracket/attachment.

Poking Wire

A wire that is poking your cheek or gums can often be eased using orthodontic wax. If the wire has shifted, you may be able to gently push it back using a clean cotton swab or pencil eraser. If the wire is poking a lot, and the wax is not working, you can use a clean nail clipper to carefully snip the wire.

Lost or Broken Aligner

If you lose or break a clear aligner, contact your orthodontist as soon as possible. You may be advised to move to the next aligner or wear a previous one temporarily.

Soreness or Irritation

Some discomfort is normal, especially after adjustments. Over the counter pain relief, soft foods, and orthodontic wax can help. Taking a painkiller before your bonding appointment and adjustment visits can also help.

Bleeding Gums

The most common reason for red, puffy, bleeding gums is gingivitis. It is very important to maintain a consistent flossing routine. If you forget a few weeks, you may notice that your gums bleed easily. This is normal, and things will slowly heal if you floss properly. Poor flossing habits can lead to slower tooth movement and extended time in treatment, as well as bone loss and gum recession.

When to Call the Office

Contact us as soon as a bracket/attachment/aligner is lost. If you have any concerns or questions you can reach us by phone, text, or email. Being prepared helps you stay calm and protects your smile throughout treatment.
