Underbite Correction
An underbite is a type of bite problem where the lower teeth sit in front of the upper teeth when the mouth is closed. This can affect both the appearance of the smile and how the teeth function together. In many cases, an underbite is caused by the upper jaw not growing forward enough, the lower jaw growing too much, or a combination of both.
One of the most effective ways to correct certain types of underbites in growing patients is with a protraction facemask appliance. This is a specialized orthodontic device worn outside the mouth that gently guides the upper jaw forward over time. It works by applying light, consistent forces through elastics (that are worn for a minimum of 12 hours a day) that connect the facemask to attachments inside the mouth, usually on a upper jaw expander.
The protraction facemask is typically used in younger patients between the ages of 6 and 10 while the facial bones are still developing. This timing is important because it allows us to influence jaw growth in a way that isn’t possible once growth is complete. By addressing the underlying skeletal issue early, we can often reduce or even eliminate the need for more complex treatment, such as jaw surgery, later in life.
With consistent wear as prescribed, the facemask can gradually bring the upper jaw into a better position, improving both the bite and facial balance. It’s a powerful example of how early orthodontic intervention can guide natural growth to create healthier, more confident smiles.
